The Nikkei 225 Futures (Dec 2025 contract) on the Osaka Exchange briefly touched the 50,000 mark<\/strong> at around 10:18 a.m. SGT<\/strong> on Tuesday, October 21, 2025, driven by optimism that Japan\u2019s new coalition government will roll out policies to spur economic growth. However, profit-taking later in the session trimmed gains.<\/p>\n

As of 21 October, the Nikkei 225 rose by 0.27% to close at 49,316.06;<\/strong> while the Topix index<\/strong> rose just 0.03% to 3,249.50. <\/strong>Both indices hit a new intraday record– with the Nikkei 225 hitting 49,945.95 <\/strong>while the TOPIX hit 3,274.06<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

In the currency market, the U.S. dollar strengthened past the \u00a5151 level<\/strong> as investors sold the yen, typically viewed as a safe haven, following the rally in Japanese equities. At midday, the dollar traded at \u00a5151.10\u2013\u00a5151.14<\/strong>, compared with \u00a5150.71\u2013\u00a5150.81<\/strong> in New York overnight. The euro<\/strong> was quoted at $1.1633\u2013$1.1635<\/strong> \u548c \u00a5175.79\u2013\u00a5175.86<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The continued rise in equities came ahead of Sanae Takaichi\u2019s expected election as Japan\u2019s new prime minister<\/strong> later in the day, following her coalition agreement with the Japan Innovation Party. Analysts noted that while markets had largely priced in the new government, expectations of political stability and expansionary fiscal policies spurred additional buying.<\/p>\n

Investor sentiment was further lifted by easing concerns over U.S.-China trade tensions<\/strong>, after President \u5510\u7eb3\u5fb7\u00b7\u7279\u6717\u666e<\/strong> expressed optimism about reaching a \u201cfantastic deal\u201d with Chinese President Xi Jinping<\/strong> in their upcoming meeting.<\/p>\n
