Biogen Inc. is a Fortune 500 biotechnology company that specialises in research and development of treatments for neurological diseases. Over the years, the company has developed well-established medications for multiple sclerosis, plaque psoriasis, spinal muscular atrophy, and leukemia, and has research programs focused on other diseases such as Alzheimer’s and dementia.
The company achieved carbon neutrality in 2014, by matching 100% of their electricity usage with renewable energy, credits and offsets. In 2020, the company launched their Healthy Climate, Healthy Lives initiative which is a 20-year, $250 million commitment to eliminate fossil fuel emissions across all operations by 2040. The ambitious initiative marked it as the 1st Fortune 500 company to commit beyond net zero and become fossil fuel free. As part of their commitment, Biogen has tied a portion of their employees 2021 compensation to advancing their Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) strategy.
Just last year in 2021, Biogen also joined the MIT Climate and Sustainability Consortium (MCSC), an alliance comprising of 16 sustainability leaders across sectors to establish processes and breakthrough strategies for environmental innovation. Some prominent companies within the alliance are Apple, Boeing, IBM and PepsiCo. Since then, the company has also embarked on other green initiatives from electric vehicle programs to establishing green Biogen labs.
