Trek to Bukit Timah Nature Reserve

The Phillip Nova team(s) will be hiking one of the many trails in Singapore's largest surviving primary rainforest. The experience is designed to help team members who are aged both above and below 40 years communicate effectively with one another and develop trust. For many of us, interacting with a completely natural environment is a relatively new experience. As we experience nature in its most pristine form at the Bukit Timah Nature Reserve and come close to one of the richest and most diverse ecological systems, we hope to, as a team, overcome the little challenges that may present themselves when we navigate our way around.

Building bonds at work creates a more harmonious and healthy environment for Phillip Nova staff to work in. From this half-day workshop run by professional teambuilding trainers, we hope staff will develop new skills to break barriers and build a more collaborative work culture.

That was probably why my colleagues and family organized a surprise birthday party for me in the office on my 40th birthday. My role then is no different from what I’m doing now – stretching staff to maximise their potential.

Executive Director

When I was 40, I had just assumed the role of Executive Director at Phillip Futures. I faced many challenges as I transited into the role. For example, my roles and responsibilities have extended beyond a single department, or even beyond a few departments. I had to start seeing things from an even larger perspective and manage the company from a more macro view. Daunting as it can be, I take comfort in knowing that I had been training for this role and I had been prepared for it. At no point had I felt that I was alone throughout all my years of working in this company. I have always been and I still am working with a group of dedicated and passionate people alongside me, who are as committed as I am to take Phillip Nova to greater heights.

The time when I was 40 was is indeed way, way, way back. Back then, I was just into my third or fourth year of doing sales full time. Prior to that, I was managing the night Dealing desk and all these were before electronic trading came about. I remember that the Blackberry mobile phone was a must-have  for all sales people and I was working on my Blackberry all the time as a sales VP, covering the region of Indonesia, Thailand and Malaysia. I was also starting to explore Vietnam, which back then was not as open an economy as it is today. There was a lot of communication, a lot of potential in the financial markets of those regions.

Today, I may not be 40 anymore but I am still on the move, still working very much on my phone, although not a Blackberry anymore. I am still travelling a lot physically to meet my potential customers, sales teams and business partners. The Asian markets I started out at back when I was 40 are still very close to my heart. There has been so much growth since those days, and yet there is still so much potential. The Phillip Nova Global symposiums that started years ago are my brainchild, and each year, we explore several countries, Dubai, Malaysia, Vietnam and USA, with the purpose of creating and multiplying trading opportunities, which is the value we bring to our customers.

Operations and Settlements

When I was 40, the business was much smaller in scale and as a company, we were doing many things manually. Fast forward to today, 22 years on, business has grown significantly and the staff force alone has grown 3 times. We have digitalised almost everything, for example, straight-through processing is the norm, floor trading has become online trading etc. However, the key thing is that the core management team remains the same and ready to charge the company forward.

Global Derivatives and Commodities Dealing

When I was 40, I was leading the commodities dealing team. I was responsible for the dealing desk’s efficient trade executions and strong relationships with customers. My team and I were mainly supporting businesses from Financial Institutions and Commodity Traders, so we had to create processes that met their needs. Back then, trade executions were manual and time-consuming. We started the straight through process to achieve a ticketless dealing environment, and over the years, we continued to finetune this process. Challenges came in many forms, the trade execution process itself, getting dealers and myself up to speed with the process, managing the team as well as managing the customers we face.

Today, I am also leading the global derivatives dealing team. With the expansion of products that our brokerage offers, the customer base has also become larger and trade execution processes have to be more dynamic. My team and I will continue to work closely with middle and back office as we all aim for the same thing, which is to make trading smoother for our clients and to help them take advantage of market opportunities.

Quek Seok Tin

Finance

When I was 40, I was leading the Finance team in the company. That year was significant for me as I recall that we reached a milestone in the area of fund deposits for customers. Along with my very competent and supportive Finance team, we enabled and empowered our customers to top up their funds instantly using via PayNow and eNETS, so they can take advantage of market opportunities quickly.

Over the years, we continue to aim for operational efficiency by facilitating smoother funds transfer procedures and quicker funds reflection in customers’ account. These would in turn benefit the customers who trade with Phillip Nova. Many manual tasks were removed and these required a lot of cooperation and synergy with other colleagues departments such as operations, middle office, IT and business analysts.

Today, I look forward to using my expertise to support the growing business. I will continue to lead my team well as we serve a bigger pool of customers who are trading a more diversified array of products and who would possibly need even better fund processes in time to come.

At the age of 40, I was given the exciting challenge of revolutionizing Phillip Nova trading system, creating a one-stop-shop that offered a seamless and efficient trading experience for our clients. Furthermore, I embraced the challenge of elevating our technical support services to new heights by spearheading the implementation of automations and paperless processes, with the aim of achieving unparalleled efficiency and a truly client-centric experience.

Retail Business

When I was 40, I was trusted to manage the Retail team in Singapore and to support the business in Phillip Indonesia. I faced many challenges and learned many things, but I remember feeling very comforted to have received tremendous support from my teams and my peers.

Today, I remain challenged and fulfilled as I am still very involved in many projects with the aim of improving processes for both external and internal stakeholders. I share the Management’s vision and will work to build a better workplace and stronger teams so that Phillip Nova will continue to be one of the best retail brokers.

IT Operations and Services

There is a quote that says “Life does begin at forty. Up until then, you are just doing research.” 

Now looking back, 2013, the year I was 40, was an eventful year for the IT department and for me.  I was heading EDP and IT Support team. At 40, I took up a Master’s programme in IT for to upgrade myself. Similarly, 2013 was the year that the IT department introduced several trading software such as RTS Tango solution to attract HFT and colocation customers, SHARP point, and eSunny to serve B2B business and moved from TT NATIVE to TTNET solution for professional traders. In December that year, we also introduced the first virtualization and centralized storage in Hong Kong data centre. The years after that were equally, if not more colourful. With the addition of more products and services, the tech support we offer has to keep up. Needless to say, technology is ever-changing. At the same time, our customers’ needs are also evolving and we have more and more customers on various platforms. I am happy to keep myself and my team challenged in so many ways as we aim as a company to stay as one of the top brokers in the region.

Middle Office

When I was 40, I was running the Middle Office, and I still am.  

Over the recent years, the company has embarked on its digitization journey with customer centricity as our focus. Our team achieved a key milestone when we launched the Nova Risk Management System (RMS), a multi asset trading platform built from scratch that houses our own risk management system. We have also made huge strides in our efforts to automate and streamline processes using digital technology. We believe these are things our customers are looking for. Now and over the next few years, the next steps are to fine-tune our risk processes to better meet customer needs and to strike a balance in safeguarding the needs of both our customers and the company.

Mah Ai Ee

Operations, Settlements and Business Support

When I was 40, I was running the operations and settlements team in the company. Stretched out of my comfort zones, I grew personally and professionally, handling multiple projects and assuming a bigger role in decision making. I was there at many of Phillip Nova’s milestones, such as when we obtained the ICE SG clearing membership, when we started offering FX & Bullion forwards and also the SGX Titan migration. I created fond memories within my job and also, with my colleagues outside of work. I took comfort that both my family and my colleagues are supportive, so I was able to strike a balance between home and work. Today, I am excited to continue to learn and grow along with the company, to accept new challenges and to strive to become a better person personally and professionally.
